In June 2026, 18 EU Member States signed a joint declaration to create large-scale cross-border testbeds for autonomous vehicles, including freight and logistics applications. The initiative aims to coordinate approval procedures, interoperability and real-world deployment across Europe, with €20 million earmarked under the 2026 Connecting Europe Facility programme for digital infrastructure supporting autonomous driving.
AI in logistics is increasingly being used not only for analysis but also for operational decisions. DHL highlights applications such as automatically rerouting shipments when congestion, weather or port delays occur, adjusting inventory based on demand patterns, and automating supplier communication. New research published in August 2026 is also testing vision-language AI for autonomous logistics sorting, including deployment experiments involving more than 15,000 packages.
Electrically chargeable trucks grew 47.7% in the EU in the first half of 2026, reaching 4.8% of new truck registrations. Diesel still represented 92.1%. At the same time, nine EU countries backed new zero-emission truck corridors on the Scandinavian–Mediterranean and North Sea–Baltic TEN-T routes, as Europe prepares for an expected increase from roughly 26,000 zero-emission trucks today to nearly 400,000 by 2030.
